Good news for Selsey residents: work to strengthen an ageing seawall and protect homes from coastal erosion is set to begin later this summer. The refurbishment project at West Beach represents a proactive approach to coastal defence, with construction scheduled to start at the end of August 2026.

Led by Chichester District Council's coastal team, Coastal Partners, the scheme aims to reinforce a section of deteriorating seawall on the western end of Selsey. Recent inspections have indicated that the seawall is nearing the end of its serviceable life, raising the risk of failure if left unaddressed.

A timely investment in community resilience

Councillor Jonathan Brown, deputy leader of the council and cabinet member for environmental strategy, emphasised the importance of acting now. "These works are about taking action now to reduce the risk of problems in the future," he said. "By investing in the seawall at this stage, we can reduce the risk of future defence failure and help protect local homes and infrastructure."

The project also provides greater resilience while plans for the long-term Selsey Coastal Scheme continue to develop, offering a balanced approach to protecting the community's future.

What to expect during construction

Construction is expected to take around 12 weeks, although progress will depend on tides, weather and site access. The council has worked to minimise disruption during the works: public footpaths will remain open during construction, with safety measures and managed access in place to keep the community moving.

Importantly, access for HM Coastguard will also be maintained at all times, ensuring that emergency services can continue their vital work protecting the coast and its visitors.
