Sussex Artist Channels Rembrandt Inspiration Into New Creative Venture

From Childhood Wonder to Artistic Vision

A treasured childhood moment in a department store set Brian Ayling on a path that would shape his entire creative life. At just eight years old, the young Brian spotted a book about Rembrandt – its black cover emblazoned with gold lettering drew him in immediately. "The cover was black with his signature in gold and it was full of dark, dark paintings," he recalls. "I wanted it."

Though his parents had limited finances, they purchased the book for him – a gift that would prove transformative. The Dutch master's work, particularly The Night Watch, remains Brian's favourite from the old masters, and that early fascination never faded.

A Creative Journey Across Disciplines

Brian's artistic calling emerged early. Art was always his favourite subject at school, and he discovered a genuine passion during his secondary education through designing and constructing sets for school plays and musicals. "It was secondary school's saving grace for me," he explains, "but I loved art college."

His formal training began with a foundation course at Exeter School of Art, followed by studies at Birmingham, where he was based in a purpose-built Victorian art school. This education laid the groundwork for an unusually diverse and fascinating creative career that would eventually span fashion, photography, filming, and fine art.

Brian's talent earned him commissions from prestigious clients, including the luxury department store Selfridges and renowned designer Terence Conran, for whom he created his trademark large-scale canvases.

Finding Inspiration on the Sussex Coast

Now based in St Leonards, Brian has settled into the distinctive Marine Court – the residential building on the seafront that resembles an ocean liner and is one of the area's most recognizable landmarks. From his apartment window, he gazes out at the inspiring coastal landscape that surrounds him.

It's this move to the Sussex coast that has sparked a new chapter in his artistic journey. Drawing on decades of creative experience across multiple disciplines, Brian is channelling his passion into a fresh venture designed to celebrate the eclectic and vibrant spirit of both Hastings and St Leonards. The project aims to showcase not just his own work, but to provide a platform for other local artists in the community.

This new initiative represents more than just personal artistic expression – it's a commitment to nurturing and celebrating the creative talent that flourishes along the Sussex coast. For Brian, the journey that began with a young boy's fascination with Rembrandt continues to evolve, now enriching the artistic landscape of his adopted home.
