New electric car charging hub opens in Portslade with cheaper rates for drivers
V2Power has launched a rapid charging site at a BYD car showroom on Victoria Road, offering competitive prices for electric vehicle owners across Brighton and Hove.
Fast charging comes to Portslade
Electric car owners in Brighton and Hove have a new reason to smile, with V2Power opening a rapid charging hub at CG Brighton, a BYD car showroom on Victoria Road in Portslade.
The new chargers are among the fastest available to the public, capable of topping up the majority of a modern electric car's battery in around the time it takes to enjoy a cup of coffee. For those living busy lives, this speed could be a game-changer.
Competitive pricing across the board
Electricity for electric vehicles is sold by the kilowatt hour (kWh), similar to how we buy petrol by the litre. At the new Portslade hub, pay-as-you-go customers will pay 69p per kWh, while those who sign up for V2Power's membership scheme—costing just £6.99 per month via the app—will pay 59p per kWh.
Membership offers even better value for evening and night-time charging, with rates dropping to 49p per kWh between 8pm and 7am.
According to charging app Zapmap, the average pay-as-you-go price at rapid and ultra-rapid chargers across the UK was 77p per kWh in August 2026. This makes the new Portslade site considerably more affordable than the national average.
Real savings for regular users
For a typical family electric car requiring around 50kWh for a full top-up, the savings are clear. A non-member would pay £34.50, while a V2Power member would pay £29.50. An evening member charging would pay just £24.50—compared to £38.50 at the national average price.
For regular users, the membership fee pays for itself surprisingly quickly. A member charging once a month during evening hours saves around £10 on a typical top-up, easily covering the £6.99 monthly fee. Those charging twice a month during daytime hours would also benefit financially. Occasional users may find pay-as-you-go more suitable to their needs.
Hope for flat-dwellers
This new charging hub arrives at a particularly opportune moment for Brighton and Hove residents. A significant number of people in the city live in flats or terraced houses without driveways, making home charging impossible. These residents have had to rely on public chargers, making the price at public charging points the true cost of electric vehicle ownership.
A site that offers both rapid charging and cheaper-than-average rates provides these drivers with a genuine alternative and makes electric vehicle ownership more accessible and affordable.
Added benefits
The charging site is conveniently located at a car showroom, giving drivers the opportunity to book a test drive while they wait—or simply combining their visit with a browse of the latest electric vehicles on offer.
The site is now open and ready to serve the local community.
