Brighton Lanes pub undergoes exciting transformation with name change to O'Neill's
The Font in Union Street is closing for a major revamp and will reopen as an O'Neill's bar with a fresh new look.
Brighton's beloved Union Street boozer, The Font, is set for an exciting new chapter. The popular Lanes pub will close its doors from Monday 20 July to undergo a major transformation and name change to O'Neill's.
A Fresh Look for a Historic Venue
The revamp plans, which were submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council in February, include impressive upgrades to the interior and exterior. Punters can look forward to a brand new karaoke and DJ booth, modern circular booths and banquette fixed seating, and refreshed lighting throughout the space. The flooring will also be repaired as part of the works.
Additional improvements will include new fixed drinks shelves with folding tables and decorative planting rafters. The exterior of the building will be redecorated in a calming linen colour, giving the venue a contemporary feel whilst respecting its historic character.
Planning Approval and Distinctive Signage
A further planning application for new signage was submitted to the council, with distinctive barrel-shaped signs approved in May. These charming touches will help announce the new O'Neill's to locals and visitors alike.
The pub is owned by Mitchels and Butlers, the hospitality group behind the O'Neill's bar chain. Speaking about the changes, pub bosses said: "Something new is brewing at The Font. We will be closing for a short while from Monday 20th July, to give your favourite spot a fresh new name and look. Think bigger atmosphere, better vibes and even more reasons to make it your go-to. Keep an eye out – we'll be back soon with something worth shouting about at the all new O'Neill's Brighton."
A Building with History
The Grade II listed building has a fascinating heritage. Originally dating back to 1688, it was rebuilt and enlarged in 1810 and again in 1825 by renowned local architects Amon Wilds and Charles Busby. The building was once used as a chapel before ceasing to be a place of worship in 1988.
This sensitive restoration and rebrand respects the building's architectural significance whilst bringing it into the modern era with improved facilities and a vibrant new atmosphere. The community can look forward to enjoying this cherished Lanes venue in its refreshed form very soon.
