A piece of history comes to Eastbourne

History enthusiasts and curious families across Brighton and Hove will soon have a unique opportunity to step aboard one of the world's most iconic vessels. A full-scale replica of the Nao Santa Maria, the flagship of Christopher Columbus' groundbreaking 1492 expedition, is sailing into Eastbourne for a historic visit.

From June 18 to 28, the ship will be docked at Premier Marina Sovereign Harbour, welcoming visitors daily from 10am to 8pm. This is the replica's first ever visit to the Sussex coast and forms part of an ambitious 30-port historical outreach tour sponsored by Huelva Provincial Council.

Exploring life at sea in the 15th century

For visitors of all ages, the experience promises something truly special. You'll be able to explore the ship's decks and living quarters, stepping back in time to experience what life was like for the crew on that transformative voyage. Crew members will be on hand to share fascinating insights about 15th-century maritime life, making it an educational experience for families, schools, and community groups.

The original Santa Maria set sail from the port of Palos de la Frontera on August 3, 1492, alongside two caravels named the Pinta and Niña, carrying around 90 men. After 33 days at sea under Columbus' command, the ship reached the Americas on October 12, 1492. During the voyage, the original vessel ran aground on the island of La Española, but its remains were used to establish Fuerte Navidad, the first Spanish settlement in the New World.

Built with meticulous historical accuracy

The replica was constructed by the Nao Victoria Foundation in Punta Umbría, Spain, over a 14-month period starting in January 2017 and launching on March 16, 2018. Measuring nearly 30 metres in length and weighing 200 tonnes, the vessel was designed with input from shipbuilders, sailors, historians, and engineers to ensure authentic historical detail.

While faithful to the original in appearance and layout, the modern replica also incorporates contemporary essentials including engines, navigation systems, and safety equipment.

Planning your visit

Tickets are available online at tickets.velacuadra.es at discounted rates until June 17. Adult tickets are priced at £10, with children aged five to 10 at £5 and family tickets at £25. The organisers note that if online tickets sell out, no further tickets will be available at the box office, so advance booking is recommended.

Since its launch, the replica has toured ports worldwide, including cities across Spain, France, the United States, and Canada, bringing the story of this remarkable vessel to audiences across the globe.
