The Barn celebrates a decade of community spirit with festival
Westdene's beloved community space marks 10 years with Barn Fest, a day of live music, food, and family activities.
A decade of community spirit
A cherished local institution is throwing open its doors to celebrate ten years of bringing the Westdene community together. The Barn, a community space that residents fought to save back in 2016, is hosting Barn Fest on Saturday, June 27, to mark the milestone with a day packed with music, food, and family fun.
The festival runs from 2pm to 8pm, with children's activities and market stalls available until 5pm, followed by live music into the evening. Visitors can expect to find live performances, games, a dog show, market stalls, and food vendors throughout the day.
What The Barn means to Westdene
Dave Burton, a member of The Barn Steering Committee, spoke warmly about what the celebration represents. "Barn Fest is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved together and look ahead to the future," he said. "Ten years on, The Barn is doing exactly that. It has become a place where people of all ages can meet, learn new skills, enjoy activities and feel connected to their community."
The space has evolved into far more than just a venue. The Barn regularly hosts Gather, a monthly community meal that brings residents together for food, conversation, and entertainment. These gatherings have become a cornerstone of social connection in the area, proving how important such inclusive spaces are to neighbourhood wellbeing.
Growing community involvement
The venue continues to attract new groups and activities. Among the latest to make The Barn their home is Skylark Choir, which launched earlier this month. Anna Pedroza, the choir's leader, shared her impressions of the space: "I have been struck by how welcoming and inclusive The Barn is, and it's the perfect home for Skylark Choir."
This sentiment reflects what many residents have come to appreciate about the venue—it's a place where people feel valued and where new initiatives can flourish. From choirs to community meals, from children's activities to social gatherings, The Barn has proven itself to be an essential resource for the neighbourhood.
Looking forward
As Barn Fest approaches, it promises to be a perfect opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate what's been achieved, and show appreciation for the space that has become so central to life in Westdene. Whether you're interested in live music, family activities, or simply connecting with neighbours, the festival offers something for everyone.
If you're in Brighton this June, make sure to head down to Westdene and be part of celebrating a community space that truly matters.
